About DocXWrench

DocXWrench repairs documents that won't open: Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, EPUB ebooks and PDFs. You drop a file into the tool, it checks the file part by part, fixes the damage it finds, and gives you a repaired copy to download. It also converts Markdown to Word, EPUB and PDF, and Word to EPUB. Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device.

What the tool does

  • Reads the file's ZIP structure even when its index is missing, and keeps everything up to the point where a cut file ends.
  • Mends broken XML: tags left open, stray & characters, characters XML forbids, repeated attributes.
  • Rebuilds the content type list and the links between parts, and replaces missing images with a blank.
  • Tells you what the file really is when its name is wrong, such as a PDF or a plain text file saved as .docx.
  • Lists every problem it found and whether it was fixed.

For Excel workbooks it also takes out sheets that are listed but missing and removes a damaged calculation chain so Excel rebuilds it (see xlsx repair); for PowerPoint it takes out slides that are listed but missing (see pptx repair). For EPUB books it checks the package, metadata, manifest, reading order and every chapter (see the epub validator). For PDFs it rebuilds the cross-reference table, the trailer and the page tree (see pdf repair).

It's free for files up to 50 MB, with no account.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't repair old .doc files or password-protected documents yet.
  • It can't bring back text that was never saved: a file of 0 bytes, or the part of a file after it was cut off, is gone.
  • It doesn't upload your file or keep a copy of it.

Why "Wrench"

A .docx file is a box of parts, and so is an EPUB. Fixing one by hand means taking it apart, finding the broken part and putting it back together. The tool does that for you.
