Convert a Word file to EPUB

Converted on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

To convert DOCX to EPUB, drop your Word file into the tool above, add a title and author if you like, and press Convert to EPUB. Word headings become chapters and the table of contents, and lists, tables, links and images carry over. The conversion runs in your browser, so your manuscript isn't uploaded.

The chapters below explain how to prepare the Word file and what carries over.

01

Preparing the Word file

  1. Give each chapter title Word's Heading 1 style. Each Heading 1 starts a new chapter in the book.
  2. Use Heading 2 and below for sections inside chapters; they appear nested in the table of contents.
  3. Use Word's own bulleted and numbered lists rather than typed dashes or numbers.
  4. Insert images into the document rather than linking to them.
  5. Set the document title in Word's file properties, or type it in the tool's Title field.

What carries over

Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic and strikethrough, lists (numbered or bulleted, nested), tables, links and images. Code-styled text becomes code. Tracked changes are applied as accepted insertions with deletions removed.

What doesn't

Footnotes and endnotes, text boxes, headers and footers, comments, and font sizes and colors. Ebooks let the reader choose fonts and sizes, so these are best left to the reading app.

If it doesn't work

  • The tool says the file isn't a Word document: older .doc files aren't supported. Open the file in Word and save it as .docx.
  • The tool says the file is too damaged to read: repair it first with the docx repair tool, then convert the repaired copy.

Fix the file now

Drop the document into the repair tool at the top of this page. It's free, and the file stays on your device.

    Troubleshooting

The whole book is one chapter

The chapter titles don't use Word's Heading 1 style. Apply it to each chapter title in Word and convert again.
